Philosophy
From my own life experiences as well as my work, I’ve learned how most of us spend a lot of our time and energy on unjustified worry, shame and self-criticism. I’ve found that usually the most competent and seemingly confident people set themselves unrealistic goals and then berate themselves for not achieving these. I believe that therapy can give people the opportunity to develop a better understanding of these processes and learn how to view themselves and their experiences in a kinder and more helpful way.
Approach
The therapeutic relationship is central to successful treatment and this is always my main focus. When I have had therapy, the most important thing to me was that I felt I could open up and be real with my therapist, without the fear of being judged. As a result, this is always at the forefront for me as a therapist.
I am experienced in a number of approaches which I weave in based on the needs of the client. These include; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I am also an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based and NICE guideline approved treatment to help people recover from traumatic events.
Motivation
I qualified as a Counselling Psychologist over 15 years ago and, throughout this time, I have primarily worked with people who have had very difficult and traumatic life experiences and are in a lot of emotional pain. Being able to help them to reduce their pain and have happier and more fulfilling lives has kept me motivated and passionate about being a therapist.
About Me
I grew up in Ireland but moved to England as an adult. I am very active and love most sports. I started windsurfing a few years ago which I really enjoy, although still have a lot to learn!
For the past few years, I have been a foster carer. This has been incredibly challenging but amazing and has helped me to better understand and relate to young people as well as some of the challenges for parents.
I had a course of CBT Counselling with The Harley Psychology & Therapy Group (Richmond) and although it didn’t provide me with the quick fix miracle solution I was hoping for, it has made my problems feel more manageable.
