“I went to The Harley Psychology & Therapy Group to get help for my daughter who was struggling with anxiety. The psychologist we saw was fantastic and quickly gained my daughter’s confidence and taught her strategies to manage her worries. We also did some work as a family and with the school which helped me to continue supporting my daughter after the treatment was finished.”

Supporting Young Minds:

How our counselling for teenagers and children can help

Teenagers face many challenges. They must adapt not only to significant physical changes in their bodies but also to the increasing demands and expectations of society. This makes adolescence and early adulthood a common time for the emergence of mental health problems including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Teen or children’s counselling can help your child manage the challenges of mental health problems and navigate the first round of life’s challenges. Doing this at this early point can provide young adults with a significant advantage for the rest of their lives.

Common signs your child or teen may need counselling.

Children and teenagers often struggle to express emotional distress directly, so parents should look out for behavioural or mood changes. Persistent sadness, withdrawal from friends or family, sudden outbursts, difficulty sleeping, or a drop in school performance may indicate a deeper issue. Other warning signs include anxiety, low self-esteem, or reluctance to attend school.
Recognising these patterns early allows parents to seek professional support, helping their child better understand and manage their emotions before things escalate further.

The impact of mental health challenges on children and teens

Mental health challenges can affect every part of a young person’s life, from academic performance and friendships to self-image and emotional regulation. Anxiety, depression, or trauma can manifest in sleep disturbances, isolation, irritability, and even physical symptoms. Left unaddressed, these issues can become more difficult to treat in adulthood.

Early support through teen or children counselling can improve resilience, boost confidence, and equip children and teens with the coping tools they need to thrive both now and in the future.

How does counselling for teenagers and children work?

Step 1

Your therapist meets with your family together and individually (if you are comfortable to do so) to understand the issues and determine the best way to help

Step 2

As part of our teen counselling, your therapist works with the child or teen to address their problems, reduce symptoms, learn ways of avoiding similar problems and build self-esteem to prevent future difficulties.

Step 3

Typically, sessions alternate between the young person only and the parent attending. The parent and young person sessions help parents support their child effectively with current difficulties and protect their child against similar problems in the future. They are vital to ensure your child gets ongoing support outside of weekly therapy times. These sessions also help navigate the challenges of adolescence in a way that bolsters your child’s self-esteem and confidence and future-proof their mental health and wellbeing.
