I have no energy

I have no energy

by Dr Emma Gray - 13th January, 2014

Dear Dr Gray,
I am not sure what is wrong with me, I feel terrible, I have no energy, I’m miserable, I struggle to get out of bed in the morning and feel completely worthless. I have also started to feel anxious if I have to leave the house. Please help.

Dear Simon,
Your lack of energy and motivation, your struggle to get going in the morning and your low mood and low self esteem suggest you are suffering from depression. The fact that you are also starting to experience anxiety makes me think that you need to get some professional help before things escalate further. Make an appointment to see your GP (if you can’t get to the surgery ask for a telephone appointment) and discuss some treatment options; I would recommend a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Depression with a well qualified therapist. As therapy doesn’t result in an instant improvement it may be worth considering a short course of anti depressants (which your GP can prescribe for you) to give you some immediate relief from your symptoms.

I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories; I never take that privileged position for granted nor the opportunity to help someone to feel better about themselves and discover a more fulfilling life. One of my colleagues once described me as a natural psychologist; I guess she was alluding to the fact that I feel at ease being a therapist, I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
